Welcome

Once again, Titan America was an enthusiastic supporter of the second annual RALLY for ROADS!  Nearly thirty sleepy folk left Norfolk on the RussBuss2* early on Tuesday morning on March 20, with a quick stop by our Sandston, VA office to pick up some of our Powhatan and S&W counterparts from northern Virginia and North Carolina.

With the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument as auspicious backdrops, we gathered on the National Mall with workers from all facets of the transportation industry to voice our support to our Congress to pass surface transportation legislation and get America’s infrastructure back on track.

We heard a number of motivational speakers at the podium.  Congressional speakers included House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair John Mica (R-FL) and Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA). We heard other elected officials, including House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Nick Rahall (D-WV) and House Highways and Transit Subcommittee Ranking Member Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Representatives Tom Petri (R-WI) and Jason Altmire (D-PA).  But for us, none was more inspirational than our own Chief Government Affairs Officer, Hardy Johnson, who delivered a heart-felt and hard-hitting, “the time is now to engage Congress on the economic significance of the timely passage of a highway bill!”

Special thanks to Michelle Lovelace, a tireless and dedicated spirit, who organized all the details again this year. She has an amazing ability to keep everything in order and remain cheerful.  Thanks to all the good Titan America employees who took time out of their busy schedules to make their voices heard – and to rally in person.   It would be much easier to stay back at the office and write an e-mail to our representatives, or to call or fax.  But the Titan America team knows how important it is to show up in person –on behalf of Titan America, the ready-mixed concrete industry and all the other transportation workers baking in the noonday heat.

Studs Terkel said it very well, “When you become part of something, in some way you count. It could be a march; it could be a rally, even a brief one. You're part of something, and you suddenly realize you count. To count is very important.”

*Russ Buss is affectionately named after Russ Fink, our General Counsel, who was inspirational in organizing our participation in the first annual Rally and again in 2012.
